A Constant Presence

I’m writing to strongly support Sean Scanlon for re-election as our 98th District state representative.

In his four years in office, Sean has made Guilford proud. Locally, Sean works hard to make himself available and is a constant presence at community events both big and small. Unlike many politicians, he holds frequent office hours and truly listens to the concerns of those he represents.

In Hartford, Sean quickly earned the respect of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle and has an impressive number of accomplishments for someone who has only served two terms.

During his first term, he became the state’s leading voice on combating the opioid epidemic and worked hard to pass important legislation on that topic in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Sean became chairman of the Insurance and Real Estate committee in only his second term—an incredibly rare promotion for someone so junior in the legislature. As chairman and just this year, Sean wrote and passed legislation to require drug companies to justify large prescription drug price increases, legislation to protect the Affordable Care Act’s 10 “essential health benefits” such as women’s health care and pre-existing conditions, and legislation to protect consumers when hospitals and insurance companies cannot settle disputes.

In addition to being an effective legislator, Sean has been successful in reversing large cuts to Guilford’s state aid. In 2017, the original state budget proposal showed Guilford losing a massive $3 million in state funding. A cut that large would have resulted in property tax increases, but Sean worked tirelessly and the final budget cut Guilford by less than $200,000.

I believe Sean has done a fantastic job as our state representative and I hope your readers will join me in supporting him on Nov. 6.
