Community’s Spirit of Generosity

One of the good news stories of the summer is the Kidz Lunch Bunch in Old Saybrook. When the previous meal site for the free summer lunch program for children became unavailable, Kidz Lunch Bunch came to the rescue. A group of generous and exceptional individuals, committed businesses, schools, churches, and other entities came together to produce and serve more than 225 free lunches to kids this summer under the leadership of Kathy Cobb, nutritionist and Old Saybrook resident.

As first selectman of Old Saybrook, I take great pride in our community’s spirit of generosity, providing service and support to Old Saybrook families and communities beyond. I recognize and commend the following organizations for their multiple contributions leading to the success of the KIDZ project 2018—from providing warm welcoming places to eat and play to the wonderful arrays of nutritious lunchtime foods, four days a week for five weeks, accompanied by essential publicity and signage bringing in new volunteers, families, and kids.

We appreciate: Acton Library; Cloud Nine; Computer Signs; the Estuary Council of Seniors; First Church of Christ, Congregational; Board of Education, Goodwin School; Luigi’s Restaurant; Pasta Vita; Pizza Works; Staples; Stop & Shop; and Old Saybrook Information Technology, Parks & Rec, Social Services and Youth & Family Services.

Outstanding recognition goes to the more than 20 front line-volunteers from 7th grade to those in their seventh decade who transported, set up, served, opened milks, cut sandwiches, cleaned up, blew bubbles, created hats and bracelets, sang songs, and made new friends during five weeks this summer. Without the initial grant support from the Old Saybrook Public Health Nursing Board, kids could not have enjoyed the best year yet and the broader community recognition. I thank Old Saybrook for just another reason why our community is special.
