Listen, Learn, and Participate

Just as we defeated Global Companies’ attempt to construct a monstrous, 560,000-gallon propane terminal alongside our Hammonassett River, the residents of Clinton have again successfully defeated another threat to our quality of life, our health, and safety. Well-attended public hearings and overwhelming petitions in opposition of the proposed humongous recycling dump were very impressive. Testimony from well-informed residents and expert witnesses certainly influenced the Inland Wetlands Commission to unanimously deny the terrible application.

Then last Monday, a well-attended Planning & Zoning Commission public hearing led to the unanimous approval of a zoning amendment that essentially prevents future establishment of dangerous trash operations in inappropriate locations.

We’ve learned the key is to engage, educate, and gather the community to influence our land use decisions. As a board member of the Clinton Taxpayers Association, I was very proud of our organization’s efforts. Through emails, petitions, and signage, we shared important information and hearing times. Residents took the time to listen, learn, and participate. Had it not been for this community effort, I believe both these dangerous proposals might have been approved. Instead, we sent a message. Our community won’t tolerate threats to our beautiful town and residents. We understand it is up to us to be vigilant and fight to protect our town and its residents from opportunistic developers and corporations, no matter how deep their pockets. We are up to the task.

We’ve also sent the clear message that elected officials must represent and protect us, or we’ll get rid of them. And it appears they’re starting to listen.
