Top of the List

The June 21 article “Gov. Malloy Vetoes ECS Protection Bill” was interesting, clear, and fairly concise. Most interesting was the “Madison Element” section on page 18.

I quote, “In the approved state budget, Madison ended up receiving about $417,000 in ECS dollars, as well as roughly $295,000 in PILOT funds and roughly $176,000 for the Municipal Stabilization Grant...the town wasn’t counting on any of that money to offset expenditures...”

Since the Board of Finance severely cut the E.C. Scranton Library funds by $300,000, my hope is that it will revisit those cuts, and at least reinstate the $100,000 cut the library said it could live with after sharpening its pencils to the finest point.

As we speak, six or more librarians are losing their jobs. Hours and access to programming is being severely cut, at the same time we celebrate the Strong Field renovation. This town can afford to support its library, which is a key factor in providing the quality of life here for all of its populations.

When the Board of Finance takes up more formal discussions of what to do with the money, my hope is that it will remember the previous hearings and put restoring the library funds at the top of the list, as a high priority toward an educated Madison.
