A Moment to Thank Volunteers

While we get set to enjoy another spectacular fireworks display and your readers are enjoying the evening with family and friends, I hope they will take a moment to thank the many others that make this event possible.

No, I’m not talking about the donors. I’m talking about the volunteers—the Madison fire marshals who have been on the barge since it arrived early in the morning, inspecting and monitoring the loading operation along with the Madison fire departments. I’m talking about both Madison Hose #1 and North Madison volunteers who have been patrolling the area around the barge since it was loaded early in the day, and the Guilford and Clinton fire departments, also on water patrol duty. Fire trucks and their crews will be on standby at various points along the beach before during and after the show. Madison EMS and Ambulance will have multiple crews at the ready at three beaches. Madison Beach & Recreation donates its time to make sure the signs are out for the traffic patterns as well as clean-up after the show. Durham Bus and its drivers will put in long hours with such happy passengers. Last but certainly not least, the officers of the Madison Police Department implement the traffic pattern for what the chief has described as the single largest attended event in Madison.

Remember these individuals are not spending the day and night with their families. They are there to make sure the event runs smoothly for our enjoyment and safety. Let’s take a moment and thank them!
