Fun Was Had by All

The second annual Tiger Tracks Buddy Track Program wrapped up on May 30. The program, conceived and initiated by Ashlinn Virgulto, a senior at Daniel Hand High School (DHHS), with assistance from Keelin Virgulto, aDHHS freshman, was held on three successive Wednesdays, May 16, 23, and 30. It was designed to provide students with special needs and other novice youths with an opportunity to learn about, and compete in, track and field events.

The first two sessions involved clinics with stations for sprinting, relay racing, long jump, turbo javelin, shot (soft) put, and hurdles. The last session was a traditional meet, with all athletes competing in the aforementioned six events. After the meet, an awards ceremony was held, followed by pizza for all participants. More than 50 volunteer buddies, including DHHS students, Polson Middle School students, teachers, coaches, and other community members participated, coaching, teaching, and cheering on the more than 20 young athletes.

The first session was forced into Polson Gym due to inclement weather. However, the rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of all who participated. The succeeding two sessions were held on beautiful warm days, and fun was had by all!

Tiger Tracks would like to thank the Town of Madison and First Selectman Tom Banisch for supporting and endorsing the program. Tiger Tracks would also like to thank the Madison Public Schools Superintendent Tom Scarice, DHHS Principal Anthony Salutari, Polson Principal Frank Henderson, Dr. Linda Tuzzio, and Dr. Elizabeth Battaglia for their assistance and support. Finally, Tiger Tracks would like to thank sponsors and supporters for their assistance, discounts, and contributions: The Rotary Club of Madison, The Exchange Club of Madison, Gorilla Graphics, Amato’s Pizza, and Mr. James Bushong.
