Much Better Use

I am writing today regarding the proposed purchase of the Venuti property in Killingworth. I am adamantly opposed to this purchase. The town roads are in terrible condition. Spencer Hill Road is crumbling and falling apart as are other roads in town. The guardrails on the side of the road, which are there to prevent cars from falling over the hill in an accident, are old, rotted, and falling. They should have been replaced a long time ago. The town hall should be replaced or have a complete overhaul. The state has dropped our funding by millions of dollars and the future of these funds in up in the air.

I do not think it is a necessary purchase for the town. The property was too expensive at $4 million and is even more absurd at $6.25 million. The cost of this purchase is said to be about $180 a year in taxes on the average home and we would still have a crumbling infrastructure to deal with.

Our selectmen have done a good job of controlling spending in very difficult situations and this money could be put to much better use. The purchase of this property is just the beginning of what this land will cost the taxpayers in the future.
