Make This Much Safer

I was happy to read in The Source that our town has formed the Ad-Hoc Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee [May 3 story “Madison Works Toward Complete Streets Policy”]. I work close to the downtown area and I regularly see people of all ages walking and biking around and on the roads to get there. I also live in town and my neighbors and I use the roads every day for walking our dogs, going for jogs, and riding our bikes.

One measure that would make this much safer would be spraying for poison ivy. This time of year the roadsides are covered with the shiny, red, three-leafed plants. Many times cars and buses will pull over to give plenty of room to bikers and pedestrians, but sometimes they can’t. When that happens, we can’t go onto the shoulder without risking a terrible rash from the poison ivy. It also poses a threat to utility workers who are trying to keep the electric lines clear for hurricane season.

I ask the committee to add a recommendation for poison ivy eradication.
