A Few Tips for Parents

Spring is here and we are at the beginning of graduation season. These are memorable times for students, and we are committed to making this chapter of their lives as safe as possible. Here are a few tips for parents to think about.

Research shows that good communication between parents and teenagers can have a positive influence on risk-taking behavior by teens. Teens who report regular, open communication with their parents about important issues say they are more likely to try to live up to their parents’ expectations and less likely to use illegal substances, or engage in other risky behavior.

Parents should discuss rules for graduation/prom parties: their own rules, the school rules, and the possible consequences. Parents should communicate with your student ahead of time about the agenda for the evening, discussing the evening’s curfew and what acceptable after-curfew possibilities there might be (an alcohol/ drug-free post-prom party, inviting friends back home to spend the night under your supervision, etc.).

We also suggest parents know who is driving, not rent hotel rooms for prom-goers, communicate with other parents about plans, and stay up for their children’s safe return home.

We want the season to be full of great memories. Parent support is key to children’s success.
