Respect for Our Veterans

I’d like to remind the people of Madison that the Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 28. I’d particularly like to remind our usual participants that we are counting on them to be there and to show their usual patriotism. So, school bands, boy and girl scouts, firefighters, and police officers are encouraged to come on down to our parade as always to show their respect for our veterans.

The parade will form from 9 to 9:45 a.m. in the Stop & Shop Parking Lot off Samson Rock Road. There will be persons assigned to help each unit find their place to await marching—look for some very official looking volunteers carrying signs called “Line of March”; they will help participants get in place.

The parade will follow the usual route this year, from Samson Rock Drive, down Route 1 to the Green for ceremony number one, then down Route 1 to West Cemetery for ceremony number two where, at the conclusion of the ceremony, parade participants will be dismissed. Ceremony number three will be at West Wharf. Veterans will be transported there from the Legion Hall for ceremony.

The main ceremony will take place on the Green. Addresses will be made by First Selectman Tom Banisch, State Representative Noreen Kokoruda, Me (American Legion Post 79 Commander Donna Farrell), and VFW Post 2096 Commander Larry Brundrett, along with students.

All veterans are cordially invited to come down to join us in this parade. Those who can still get into their old uniform may wear it or any part of it that they can still fit into. Those who are unable to walk should come anyway, we have cars ready to transport them on the parade route and we truly would appreciate their presence.
