In No Way Necessitated

The proposed Madison town budget for next year includes a $300,000 reduction to the Scranton Memorial library’s budget. That’s a whopping 24 percent of our town library’s operating budget, a cut that cannot be sustained without firing almost half the library’s staff and severely curtailing services and hours.

This level of cuts is in no way necessitated by the upcoming library expansion project. The library’s board and director have a plan for maintaining most services during construction, if the town’s Board of Finance amends the budget to include a more modest $100,000 reduction.

I encourage those readers who agree with me that $100,000 is a better way to let their elected representatives hear from them early and often.
