Enough is Enough

The budget referendum will be on Tuesday, April 10, and as of writing we still have no set mill rate so our tax increase is yet unknown. One thing is certain though, another increase will be proposed and likely a big one.

The latest number I have read is a 6.6 percent increase. It’s a big increase and although some will not care, whatever ends up on the ballot will make life harder for many of our neighbors, and will increase the likelihood that our grown children will locate elsewhere.

We all love this town and Guilford is undeniably a very nice place in which to live. Unfortunately it is progressively becoming only available to the fairly well off. Those of us established here try to absorb the punches, but everything has its limits.

Should we just roll over and say “Yes”? We all know that government is horribly inefficient, and in contrast to private business, maintaining the status quo is the objective. If reducing waste was honestly the goal, there are numerous areas to tackle and savings to be made. Unfortunately this involves taking on the established practices, unions, etc., and that is hard. Easier to just raise taxes and that is what will happen if we do not say, “Enough is enough.”

I hope your readers will not accept an unreasonable proposal and will vote “No” on Tuesday, April 10, and keep voting “No.”
