Setting the Example

Look on the list of subjects taught to our young students and no where will you find the following courses on subjects like sharing, caring, and giving. They don’t show up on any written course schedule, but at the Joel School, more important they are part of that school’s DNA. If you wonder how can that be possible, I can give you proof.

On Feb. 23, I was honored to be included in group of people involved in non-profit organizations in Clinton to the Joel School 100 Days of School Celebration. This was an amazing assembly. Every one of the Joel School children along with teachers and staff gathered in the gymnasium. The overriding theme was caring about and doing something good for others. For the weeks preceding the event, the Joel School children gathered needed items for these different charities. It truly was quite the sight to walk the hallways and see all the boxes filled to overflowing with what they had gathered.

The classrooms of Mrs. Ruzzo, Mr. Reynolds, Mrs. Stiver, Mrs. Madura, and Mrs. Drena collected many boxes of needed items for Families Helping Families. This is not a new event; they have been doing this for the past 10 years, so as with other subjects, sharing, caring, and giving have become part of the fabric of Joel School.

These are not just elementary school subjects or lessons. These non-courses are life lessons that are being learned at a very young age and will remain with these children for their entire life. So we thank the teachers and staff at Joel School for not only setting the example, but teaching these young children to be the example.
