Decision Sends a Message

Clinton’s annual fee for the next fiscal year for 9 Town Transit public bus service is based on population and usage. I noticed that the Board of Selectmen recently recommended a cut to the requested fee for service, or as the board referred to it, our “donation.”

By doing so, every other town in the region served may have to pick up the shortfall and this decision sends a message that Clinton does not support the other towns. This transportation is critical for those it serves—the working poor, seniors, veterans, those with mental and physical challenges, and teens and other adults who do not drive. The state Department of Transportation is already cutting the bus service funding, which pushes our Route 1 service further into jeopardy.

These folks who depend on this service need to get to their jobs, their healthcare, and other needed services. Any cut of this nature is heartless!

I encourage the selectmen to make a decision to restore the cut in funding.
