We Are Vulnerable

A presentation has been made to the Board of Selectmen and Guilford will soon be publicly discussing fracking waste disposal in our town. With well water, poor-drainage clay soil, and granite ledge; with precious wetlands, estuaries, and fragile Long Island Sound; with agricultural enterprises; and with anticipation of rising sea levels, we are exceptionally vulnerable to the toxic waste of fracking.

Because of a loophole in state law, fracking waste is not required to be labeled as hazardous waste, meaning there is no special requirement for handling or treatment. It can, however contain drilling lubricant and other pollutants, such as chemicals, metals, carcinogens, and naturally occurring radioactive materials.

I encourage your readers to make it a point to understand what this involves, and have their voices heard.
