The High Moral Ground

I am having trouble comprehending the outrageous behavior of then-pastor Care Goodstal-Spinks at the Old Stone Church [“Domestic Violence Arrest Made Despite Pastor’s Objection in East Haven,” Feb. 1]. The East Haven Police were not conducting a witch hunt with pitch forks and torches. For the citizens on the streets of our town, the police have a duty to protect the security of all townsfolk.

Is it just me who has been questioning the high moral ground claimed by religious leaders (of all faiths) on questionable issues? The use of the word “high” seems absurd with the actions of the Roman Catholic hierarchy on abuse by priests. “Moral” is certainly not trying to protect criminals from justice under society’s laws. The “ground” has shifted from firm to an absolute quagmire on many social issues for area churches.

For the Old Stone Church, leaders have a lot of explaining to do to our community. For the police, I thank them for handling a difficult situation in the manner they did.
