Now is the Time

The Madison Board of Selectmen (BOS) has scheduled two evenings of presentations, in mid-February, from the developers who have presented proposals for the development of the Academy property. That will be followed by a public hearing by the BOS to receiver input from an informed citizenry. The goal is to have the question on the same ballot as the town budget in early May 2018.

The Academy property has been subject to a number of studies since it was closed as a school in June 2004. There have been previous proposals and estimates of costs associated with the disposition of the property. All of them are out of date and of dubious relevance at this time. Now is the time for the folks of Madison to become knowledgeable and informed as to what are the reasonable alternatives in today’s real estate development environment.

I encourage your readers to take the time to attend the public sessions and/or visit exhibits that will be located at the library and at Town Hall. Information will also be available on the town website www.madisonct.org. There will be multiple sources of information for the folks on Madison to prepare themselves to make an informed decision on voting day.

We should decide on the basis of what is the best for the town as a whole and not for the benefit of a small, vocal, special interest group. Hopefully the voter turnout will be a significant in relation to the 13,000-plus members of the Madison legislative body.
