Inspiring to See

I attended the Jan. 10 RTM meeting to support the vote to move forward with Blackstone library renovations. Like many Branford residents, I take pride in our library for its beautiful architectural style, inside and out, as well as the range and diversity of the programs offered. I have attended writing classes, cooking instructions, musical performances, and borrowed countless books there. The library is the heart and soul of this town.

Libraries are the only place I can think of where all are welcome—they are truly democratic places where anyone can enter regardless of their socioeconomic status—so it was heartening for me to witness democracy in action at the RTM meeting as many of us sat in the crowded firehouse meeting room and witnessed the community coming together: a democracy supporting a democratic place. Several residents, including two 5th graders and a 90 year-old woman, spoke about the importance of the library in their lives. In this age of digital connectivity, it was inspiring to see people standing up for a physical place that encourages learning, curiosity, and inclusion.

I can live anywhere and I continue to choose Branford. The RTM meeting conversations and subsequent “Yes” vote to improving the library, reminded me why I stay.
