Starting with Hope

Each year as we awake to the new year, we often reflect on how we wish to be going forward. The year 2017 has been a challenge on many levels, so perhaps that hope for renewal was even more on our minds.

New Year’s Eve was bitter cold; New Year’s Day, still in the low single digits. I ventured out early afternoon heading down Three Mile Course. I encountered a group of people in the middle of the road waving me on. Quickly, I realized that there was a young rabbit in distress in the road. I joined the concerned individuals who were trying to no avail to catch this small bunny. As luck would have it, a retired game warden stopped and was able to catch this terrified rabbit. We, all strangers, bonded while waiting for animal control to arrive. One woman donated a towel from her car to wrap this small creature.

I remember saying to the others as we broke up the intervention, “It takes a village.” We have no names, nor is that important. We know that we began 2018 in a meaningful way. I followed up with animal control who assured me our New Year rabbit is doing well. Let’s all assume we have given him/her the name Hope.
