12/06/2017 07:00 AMThank you for the powerful article “Promoting Justice, Equality, Inclusion, and Tolerance with Witness Stones” in the Nov. 16 edition of your paper. I am hoping that the Town of Madison decides to join the Town of Guilford in this effort to recognize the slaves that were held by landowners in Madison. Involving high school students in researching the history of the slaves is commendable, since so much of our future as a state and country will eventually reside in their hands.
Establishing the lenses of “dehumanization, treatment, paternalism, economics, as well as agency and resistance,” perhaps will ensure that we will eventually live up to the values that we agree are important as towns and as a country.
