Declining Enrollment in HK

At the Killingworth Board of Selectmen meeting on Nov. 27, a Haddam-Killingworth Board of Education (HK BOE) representative made a report on some HK issues. It seems to me that the BOE has decided on the plan to consolidate the present five-school district into a four-school district.

Their plan as presented would move the 4th graders out of the elementary schools to the school that we now call the middle school, to create two separate schools in that one building with separate administration and other staffing. Busing and many others issues have not yet been ironed out.

The conservative establishment of the savings from staff reductions is about $900,000, not including the savings from the expenses from the closed school.

As everyone knows, we have declining enrollment in HK, and it was stated that in the next five years they expect a further decline of about 350 students.

They plan to have public meetings to present their plan in late January or early February and listen to citizen feedback and to implement their plan after the next budget cycle.
