Thank You, Kirk Carr

We wish to thank Kirk Carr for his efforts in running for First Selectman of Clinton. Despite a strong showing, the outcome was not what we would have hoped. It’s unfortunate the RTC and Mr. Farmer didn’t throw their full support behind Kirk after he won the primary. For many years, we have read Kirk’s thoughtful, researched, and reasoned editorials on myriad issues confronting the town. It is evident that he cares about the town and does his homework. We wholly supported his candidacy and went door to door in our own neighborhood on his behalf.

Now, it is up to Ms. Goupil and the incoming new selectmen to address the pressing issues confronting the town. Although Ms. Goupil refused to speak to the issue of taxes during the debate at Morgan, she will now have to take a position. We wish her luck and urge her to hold the line on tax increases.

How refreshing would it be to show a modicum of fiscal restraint in the town? Our own mortgage has increased every year to accommodate a burgeoning mill rate. Coming up with extra funds means making tough personal choices for our household.

No one begrudges providing a quality education to the students of this town or services to the community. However, do budgets continually have to increase to accomplish such laudable goals? Shouldn’t the electorate receive a “fiscal bone” once in a while? Imagine one year without a property tax increase!

We encourage Mr. Carr to remain active in the town and continue to be one of the voices calling for accountability. We urgently need tax stabilization, sound business development (no CVS debacles), and streamlined services so that the taxpayers of Clinton can get some much needed fiscal breathing room.
