The Enormous Impact

I am urging all residents of North Haven to attend the Planning & Zoning Meeting on Monday, Nov. 13 at the Rec Center to oppose the application of Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL) to build a transportation facility in excess of 80 bays at 300 Elm Street. ODFL is a 24/7 operation, which means round-the-clock truck traffic and noise for all area residents on Elm Street and Sackett Point Road. ODFL runs all sizes of trailers from 28- to 53 feet, in addition to tandem trailers.

This facility will be build adjacent to the Quail Run Condos and diagonally across from North Haven High School. Elm Street is a two-lane road and connects a large part of town to Universal Drive. This is a well-traveled road and the increase of traffic will create havoc, especially when school is dismissed and during the morning and evening commuting hours.

Quail Run is a 55-and-older community that is built on both sides of Elm Street and residents are constantly crossing back and forth to visit with friends and to attend various activities at the clubhouse. A major increase in traffic will pose potential safety risks to all pedestrians who cross up and down Elm Street. I foresee major traffic issues and I do not believe enough trees and fences can be erected to buffer the noise the facility will generate.

The is also talk of lowering the road under the railroad bridge at the intersection of Sackett Point Road (another two-lane road) and Universal Drive to accommodate the trailers. The impact this will have on traffic will be horrendous.

Before we allow this application to proceed, let’s make sure our commission members understand the enormous impact it will have on our neighborhood.
