Much Has Been Accomplished

My name is Carl P. Fortuna, Jr. and I seek re-election as first selectman this fall with Selectman Scott Giegierich and Treasurer Bob Fish.

Since first being elected in November 2011, much has been accomplished while still keeping Old Saybrook’s taxes (18th-lowest mill rate in the state) as low as possible and our quality of life the best in the state. So many of our citizens are rightly concerned about the State of Connecticut’s fiscal mess. As I have previously reported, Old Saybrook’s government has outperformed the state on every measure. We have reformed health care, our town pension (now a 401k-style plan) and our government from top to bottom. Our town finances have improved markedly over the past six years.

But as our town moves forward, Old Saybrook needs to distinguish itself not only with good financials, but with the highest possible quality of life for our residents, visitors, and businesses. To do this, we must not only maintain our infrastructure but improve it. North Main Street, a project that was stalled for 10 years, is now complete. Our Main Street parking lot will support future recreational opportunities as we develop the rear portion of the property. We have continued to address the needs of all our buildings with a yearly maintenance schedule so that our library, Town Hall, fire station, Duffy Pavilion, Town Beach Pavilion, mini-golf, police station, Youth & Family Services, The Kate, and all our schools will not be victims of deferred maintenance, one of the most expensive mistakes a municipality can make.

Our team has accomplished this while maintaining one of the lowest property tax rates in the state. Scott, Bob and I ask for your readers’ continued support.
