Celebrated the Strength

Some people apparently think Killingworth is a swamp. I say we are a fertile wetlands, where all manner of species live together, where new ideas bubble up, where the whole, intricate network of relationships is necessary for the community to thrive. We cannot afford to give in to divisiveness and resentment. I have been confronting those forces since I was first elected, and I don’t plan to give into them now.

We just had a wonderful 350th anniversary celebration, culminating in a grand parade and an awesome town picnic. Pulling that off involved a two-year-long collaboration of a group of community leaders who worked beautifully together without ever asking what party someone belonged to, who might be gaining political advantage, or how anyone could make a profit off of it. Reviewing the day’s events, not one of us had heard any negative comments. We commemorated our long history, but we also celebrated the strength of our community today and laid the groundwork for a future of positive cooperation.

We can do it. Killingworth is a great town full of great people. The best part of the job of first selectman is working with all of them. I am grateful for the opportunity to have done so for the last few years, and I look forward to continuing to do so.
