Careful Planning, Prudent Spending

This is an extraordinary time for Madison. Our new reality is now clear: We must be able to support ourselves with no funding from Hartford. Fortunately, we’re well positioned to weather this financial storm thanks to careful planning and prudent spending in the past.

On Nov. 7, we’ll say “Thank you” and “Goodbye” to decades of accumulated knowledge and wisdom as some of our board volunteers take a well-deserved rest. I’m excited to report that the Republican slate is ready to continue its outstanding work.

Tom Banisch and I are looking forward to the addition of Jean Ferris to the Board of Selectmen. Jean has been a tireless volunteer in our community service organizations and will hit the ground running in November. On the Board of Finance, Jean Fitzgerald, Ken Kaminsky, and Peter Roos are a powerful team. Currently chair of the Board of Education (BOE), Jean has a deep understanding of how the town budgets for operations and capital serving as the chair of the town’s Capital Improvement Committee. Ken, currently serving on the Zoning Board of Appeals, is an experienced Fortune 500 finance executive. Peter brings a fresh perspective to the team along with his experience as a corporate banking executive.

On the BOE, our candidates are Jessica Bowler, Kirk Barneby, and Dr. Violet McNerney. Jessica, currently the chair of the BOE Planning Committee, has become a natural leader on the BOE. Kirk’s experience as a portfolio manager reviewing public school financing issues will be a timely addition. Violet has her doctorate of education and is currently a public school psychologist. Her real-world experience with school children fills a need that’s missing on our BOE today.
