10/25/2017 08:00 AMIn light of a near-40-percent mill rate increase in Old Saybrook since 2010, declining school enrollment of 20 percent since 2009-’10, and spending that’s disproportionate to other shoreline communities, it’s time to take action. Family values and the needs of small businesses have taken a backseat.
Stephen Sheehan is the Democrat running for first selectman; he’ll take a stand for families and fiscal responsibility. Listening to townspeople, both within Old Saybrook departments and commissions as well as throughout the community, Sheehan will take the lead and change the way politics are conducted.
Stephen recognizes the importance of representing the interests of the people he’ll serve. He’ll listen to townspeople to gauge the desired allocation of funding between public works, police, and education. He’s looking for more teamwork among town departments and commissioners.
Sheehan understands the need for financial transparency. He believes in evaluating expenditures as a percentage of the overall budget and establishing benchmarks and best practices based on other successful towns to arrive at healthy, productive budgets. Stephen champions the concept of allocating expenditures in proportion to how residents perceive the spending to add to their quality of life. He has pledged transparent review of expenditures, with a commitment to saving town resources.
