Time to Make a Difference

My name is Kathy Zandi, and I am a first-time candidate for Board of Education (BOE) in Killingworth. As an 18-year Killingworth resident, the mother of a Haddam-Killingworth High School Junior and Haddam-Killingworth Middle School 8th grader, and a PhD organic chemist, I recognize the outstanding quality of RSD 17 schools. I’m running to help maintain that quality and build a comprehensive educational environment that is both diverse and sustainable for the good of all of our citizens, now and into the future. I will bring to the BOE the passion of a parent, the compassion of a youth leader, the critical thinking skills of a scientist, and the thoughtful balance of a taxpayer.

Professionally, I have been at Pfizer for 23 years, where I lead diverse teams of scientists supporting cancer research and development. I have years of experience making difficult decisions balancing multimillion dollar budgets. Personally, I have worked directly with Killingworth youth as an assistant scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 18 and as a co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 60779. I bring enthusiasm and commitment to everything I do: Not only did my Girl Scout Troop march in the 350th parade, but I arranged for the scouts to wear historic uniforms, and host a STEM activities table at the picnic.

Our school system impacts not only our own children, but the future of our society. Now is the time for me to make a difference that will matter to the people I have chosen as neighbors, friends, and fellow citizens. Your readers’ votes on Nov. 7 will allow me to do that.
