Know the Right Things

Fifty-four years ago, I came home from work at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft to have my wife Madge tell me that she has signed me up to run for election to the Old Saybrook Zoning Board of Appeals. I won and served the rest of the 1960s as a member and mostly chairman of this board. This was followed by approximately 10 years on the Board of Education and then service on the Board of Finance, the Board of Selectmen, a short time as first selectman, and a long time on the Conservation Commission (where purchase of open space was a priority).

Along the way, I taught accounting and mathematics for 10 years at Middlesex Community College as part of the adjunct faculty; served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce, including terms as treasurer and president; worked with the Old Saybrook’s Troop 51 Boy Scouts as scoutmaster; coached some youth football; and helped found two organizations (the Old Saybrook Land Trust and the Old Saybrook Education Foundation). For the past 18 years, I have been town treasurer.

One of the most important things a person learns from engaging in all these activities is an understanding of the right things to do to help citizens, businesses, and local government of the town. Over the last six years, I have observed First Selectman Carl Fortuna and Selectman Scott Giegerich perform as our selectmen and I can tell you that these gentlemen also know the right things to do for our town. Accordingly, I believe that the team of Carl Fortuna, Scott Giegerich, and Bob Fish deserve to be re-elected.
