Brings an Understanding

Madison has one of the best educational systems in Connecticut—thanks, Board of Education (BOE). To continue this trend, it is important to have a wide representation on the BOE. We need educators, parents, seniors, and people who understand the balance between what we can offer to the children of Madison and what the taxpayers are able to burden. Kirk Barneby is that person. Many people urged Kirk to run for BOE; we are lucky that he said “Yes.”

Kirk understands Madison kids deserve a competitive educational experience to prepare them for their next step in life. But that experience has to be balanced with needs and expenditures for the entire town. Approximately 97 percent of the town’s budget is raised through property taxes—so every resident, including retirees, those with no kids, those impacted by the dire economic environment of the state, writes substantial checks to get kids educated. In addition, the school-age population is declining while the senior population is growing. There was a reason the September school referendum failed so decidedly.

This candidate understands the value of education. He has a B.S. in math/economics and has completed course work/exams for a Ph.D. in economics. He is educated in public finance and microeconomics so thoroughly understands publicly funded education. With stints at top banks and financial intuitions, Kirk brings an understanding of how the budget can be used to continue our top-notch schools, but also be sensitive to how this education is funded.

Kirk lives in Madison with his wife, Mary (the top Girl Scout in Connecticut) and between them have raised and educated six children. He is a soft-spoken guy who understands how to work as a team to get things done.
