Beyond the Responsibilities

I want to respond to the Sept. 27 letter of Ben Charney, who asked the Killingworth Republican party to explain what “Killingworth Values” means. It is an honest question that deserves an honest answer.

As a lifelong resident of Killingworth, I guide the Republican Party’s conduct according to how things used to be in town, before politics started making people so angry; we try and help our neighbors regardless of their party affiliation. I am proud to say I stand by my word—we have organized winter coat drives, removed weeds from Chatfield Hollow Lake, and even gave out free popcorn to visitors at the town picnic. Yes, even to Democrats.

For this municipal election, I’m pleased to support candidates who follow this same outlook. As a firefighter, first selectman candidate Fred Dudek saved many neighborhood homes from fire. Board of Finance candidate Matt Young volunteers his time as a football coach for the HK School. Board of Education candidate Eileen Blewett assists in collecting food for impoverished children. And so on with our other candidates.

So, what we mean by “Killingworth Values” is that our candidates go beyond the responsibilities of their offices by volunteering their time like this to help make our town a better place. This is not a buzzword; we chose a phrase that summed up how we feel elected leaders in Killingworth should act. Besides, “our candidates go above and beyond to help make Killingworth a better place” doesn’t fit on a sign.

I cannot tell people how they should vote. What I can say is that as a Killingworth resident, this is the kind of leadership I myself would want our town to have. I hope this is the kind of leadership Mr. Charney wants our town to have, too.
