Answerable to the People

Someone asked me when I was at the farmer’s market recently, “Why are you running for office?” I didn’t have to think about it much. It boils down to this: People no longer have much power over our government. Conflicts of interest and billions of dollars in campaign donations are withering away what’s left of our democracy. We need a party solely answerable to people.

Local government can mirror what’s happening at the national level. There can be conflicts of interest, breaking of process and procedure, and personal self-interest served over the public good. I will advocate for a strong conflict of interest policy, and an ethics board. This is in fact a gold standard for ensuring ethical and responsive government.

So, I run for Board of Finance in Madison again (I previously served from 2007 to 2009), because I would like to represent the public interest and see us invest in Madison for the public good. I see possibilities where we must act to preserve our history and invest in the future.

I would encourage public input before closing the door to opportunities or making decisions to privatize. Let’s revisit Academy school, and ensure the broadest possible town-wide input on the direction we go, as well as on the reconstruction and planning of our elementary schools.

I would like to hear from residents, who may share their ideas about what Madison should be doing on my Facebook page or via email…and at the ballot box!

So, I would encourage those thinking of staying home this otherwise rather boring election to join me in shaking things up, to come out and vote for responsive, ethical government—and real Change for Madison—by giving one of their three votes for the Board of Finance to me.
