Administrators Need to Wait

At this point in time when the State of Connecticut cannot decide on a budget, our town of North Haven is on a spending tangent. The town administrators need to wait to hire a new assistant principal for the middle school (meaning a huge salary and benefits).

What was blatantly stated in the North Haven Courier [“Search Underway for New Middle School Assistant Principal,” Oct. 5] is that our student population was in decline. Also the possible addition of the Slate School in North Haven means student population would eventually dwindle. We do not need to fill vacant positions.

I agree with Board of Education member Janet Caldwell, quoted in the Oct. 5 article, that this school position needs to be investigated further.

Another matter of grave concern is the crumb rubber athletic fields. This will cost the town approximately $200,000 a year. Not only is it expensive, but it’s dangerous. I suggest that parents of students who play sports should foot the bill.

These issues are not top priority for North Haven. These expenses will be a major impact on our taxes. It would not even be considered when we do not know what direction our town will be put in fiscally. We may be losing millions of dollars to our education budget. How is the town going to make up this amount?

Governor Dannel Malloy now has towns hanging by a thread. Are the Board of Selectmen and Board of Education not worried about this? The loss will be on the town residents’ backs.

North Haven is on a spending frenzy and needs to look at the academic affects that these expenditures may cause. That is more important for the students of North Haven and residents.
