A Role Model

I’m writing to endorse Matt Hoey’s bid to become our next first selectman. By now, the readers of this newspaper are well aware of his achievements in service to the town of Guilford. I’d like to talk about his character as a man, husband, and father. I strongly feel that those character traits will continue to demonstrate his abilities as a leader. I feel I’m qualified to comment because I’ve known Matt since his children were born, and had the pleasure of serving as their pediatrician.

Matt was a great listener to his three children; he honored their successes, always made them feel special, was a protector when they needed protection, and taught them to be honorable and independent while always working to have them reach consensus with each other rather than be dictatorial. He encouraged their academic education as well as their involvement in sports and other extracurricular activities. When they were ill or hurt, he was always there for them in my office. He and his wife worked hard to show their children the balance between family, love, and work as they both had careers. Finally, he was a role model in sports, in career, and in public service. He even inspired me to run for office!

In the 12 years I’ve worked with Matt while I served on the Board of Education, he has brought these same character traits to his role as chair of the Board of Finance. I’ve watched him achieve consensus, cross party lines, and always be courteous and listen to opposing views. Now that he seeks the office of first selectman, I’m sure that he’ll serve in the same fashion.

It’s for these reasons and more, that I encourage your readers to join me in electing Matt Hoey as our next first selectman.
