Inject a Little Common Sense

Although there is no contest in the upcoming election for Board of Selectmen, there is a uniquely impactful candidate on the Nov. 7 ballot. Owen Charles is a third-party candidate for Board of Finance (BOF), and he is committed to transforming town government.

I have known Owen for a long time, and I believe he is the best candidate to ensure that the voices of all Madison residents are heard on the important issues facing Madison. Owen is committed to transparent and ethical government and is the only candidate advocating for an ethics board to reduce conflicts of interest. Owen served on the BOF from 2007 to 2009, and has a great track record of mobilizing people for strong schools, accountable government, and keeping Madison affordable for seniors.

Owen will demand that established processes be followed in implementing or changing capital projects and will protect against arbitrary decision-making. He will ensure that we listen carefully to public input on Academy School and that its use or sale benefits the town and not just developers.

Most important, in these times when issues that divide us can be a source of incivility, Owen is committed to fostering civic and civil engagement.

Tired of the same old, same old? Help shake things up a little! Three BOF member positions are open. I encourage your readers to consider the value of making Owen one of their choices. Adding a third party to the mix will inject a little common sense into the political process, create a check and balance, increase public engagement, and even bring a few laughs. Owen is a very funny guy.

I encourage your readers to join me in supporting Owen Charles on the Green Party line at the polls on Nov. 7.
