Have Held the Line

In his Oct. 12 letter “Services Becoming Inadequate,” Robert Hoff claimed that the town’s infrastructure is “falling apart” and that “services are becoming inadequate.” Mr. Hoff is entitled to his opinion. However, his opinion is contrary to the facts.

Since 2015 alone, Mayor Joseph Maturo and the Town Council have approved and invested more than $6 million into the town’s infrastructure, including more than $1.5 million for paving and sidewalk repair; almost $1 million for new vehicles, machinery, and programs at the Public Works Department; and a combined $1.7 million for new vehicles and equipment for our Police and Fire departments. Over that same time, we’ve invested $870,000 into education capital projects and even $35,000 into Americans With Disabilities improvements across town. Overall, since 2015, the mayor and the Town Council have funded more than 95 capital projects that have improved and expanded the services we offer and the safety of our facilities. In recent years, we also spent $1 million restoring our beach after Sandy and Irene and another $1.1 million building a state-of-the art 911 Dispatch Center that has improved safety town-wide.

The mayor and Town Council have accomplished all of these projects while, at the same, lowering our debt to a modern historic low and while giving East Haven the largest tax decrease in a non-revaluation year since 1989. While taxes are skyrocketing across the state, the mayor and Town Council have held the line on taxes, preserving those tax savings for our residents.

Contrary to Mr. Hoff’s opinions, East Haven has a healthy surplus, low taxes, and continues to expand and improve the services it offers residents.
