A Lust for Power

I was shocked to read the feature story in the Courier about Republican Ken MacKenzie’s request asking Charles Havrda to withdraw his candidacy for selectman. From what I know, Mr. Havrda has served Guilford well as selectman for the past eight years and has a long history of service to our town. I cannot recall ever hearing a bad word about Charles Havrda.

Mr. MacKenzie asked Mr. Havrda to step down because he questioned Mr Havrda’s “loyalty.” Who does he think he is? We have a democracy here, not a dictatorship! We the People decide who will serve, not some newcomer with a lust for power. Guilford is well-known for its citizens that volunteer countless hours to make our town the wonderful place it is and Mr. Havrda is among that group.

As a lifelong Democrat, it is shameful, appalling, and downright scary to me to see a good and decent person like Mr. Havrda treated very much the same way our current president treats many people. In fact, as I read this story, I could not help but think Mr. MacKenzie is very much like Mr. Trump—an apparently wealthy man who will do or say anything to become king! When things don’t go his way, he attacks and castigates. Are the tweets coming soon?

Guilford does not need the likes of another Trumpish character serving our town. Ken MacKenzie is the one that deserves to be castigated and I hope the voters of Guilford send that message loud and clear on election day.

I thank Mr. Havrda for all he has done for our town and I wish him and his running mate, Sue Renner, all the best in their political aspirations.
