Willing to Act

I have known Tom Banisch for more than 20 years in many capacities: parent, youth sports, volunteer organizations, and serving the town. Two words immediately come to mind: collaboration and leadership.

Tom goes out of his way to seek different points of view and I have always found him respectful and willing to engage regardless of on what side of an issue you are. This is a rare commodity in today’s world.

His approach to the Academy School property is a great example. He allowed the proposed use to play out, and when the Shoreline Arts Alliance could not meet its obligations, he was not afraid to look for other answers. He didn’t take options off the table as untouchable; he sought creative alternative approaches. While still in progress, I am sure we as citizens will benefit from a better outcome because Tom was willing to seek out possibilities and collaborate with professionals who have a history of renewal.

Tom’s leadership extends beyond the town to the region and state levels. As the state struggles with debt, deficits, and negative growth, towns like Madison are on their own to deal with the challenges. He understands we need to be open to new options, and that economic development is vital to our financial health.

We have many challenges ahead. We need a leader who is willing to listen and respect differing opinions and, most of all, be willing to act.
