Services are Becoming Inadequate

Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr., likes to say he has a surplus, but our town infrastructures are falling apart and services are becoming inadequate.

The Maturo administration has been a national embarrassment from Tacogate to a scandalous sexual harassment suit that’s costly to taxpayers to turning his back on federal laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act—for instance, if a chair-bound resident wants to access the town gazebo, he or she is unable to due to there not being a proper ramp to allow access to the area. The American Disabilities Act Commission has met only four times this year; the last was held June 28, and a staff member from the Maturo administration hasn’t attended a meeting of the committee since April.

In 2014, the minutes of the January meeting of the East Haven Counseling and Community Services Commission, which helps residents with disabilities, state that the mayor requested it reduce its budget by three percent. Maturo received a pay raise that year. Mayor Joseph Maturo currently earns $87,125. The Republican-controlled Town Council, by a 9-2 vote, approved two $11,086.50 pay raises for the mayor’s position—one in the next 2017-18 budget, one in the 2018-19 budget—to increase the mayor’s pay to $109,298.
