Need to Ask More Questions

Purchasing 34 acres of land (12 lots) by Regional 4 School District in the amount of $350,000 is a concern for all three towns. This purchase seems questionable at a time when we haven’t a state budget, supplemental tax bills are possible due to cuts in state education funds and overall enrollments are declining yearly.

While no plans are in the books for the property now, according to the school system, any future development will require additional funding. Will this come from the same sinking fund line? Although this line item is budgeted, will it be used again to fund something that is not educating our children? Do we want a nine-person Board of Education panel deciding on these sizable expenditures or should we as a tri-town have it go to vote?

Perhaps in the future, at budget time, we all need to ask more questions. Residents need to take a stand and exercise their vote on the Regional 4 budget.

Economic pressures will continue and we will see more residents moving out of our Nutmeg State and our beautiful tri-town area.
