The Knowledge and Experience

My name is Erica Gelven, and I would like to take this opportunity to share why I would like to continue to represent the voters of Clinton on the Clinton Board of Education. I have greatly enjoyed my work over the past 18 months, and look forward to continuing the improvements and changes we have implemented over that time.

First, I’d like to share what I believe makes a good Board of Education member.

I believe it requires vision and goals that reflect the town’s priorities and society’s needs. I believe it requires developing and overseeing the budget and listening to stakeholders. I believe it requires doing your homework, making informed, objective decisions that improve the function of the district while meeting the needs of our students. I believe it requires teamwork, the ability to listen to one another with respect and collaborate to find solutions, both within the board and with other boards in town.

I know that I meet all of these requirements. As the parent of two Clinton Public Schools students and an educational professional with more than 10 years teaching in higher education, I have the knowledge and experience to make the right decisions for our community. I have experienced firsthand the great things that are taking place in our classrooms, and have listened to the visions Clinton parents, citizens, and business owners have for our schools. I collaborated to develop the cost-conscious budget for the current school year, working diligently to insure that the most precise of cuts were made to maximize fiscal responsibility while meeting students’ needs.

I hope I can count on your readers’ votes on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
