A Question of this Magnitude

The Ryerson School Referendum is coming up next Tuesday, Sept. 26, and it’s important that everyone get out and vote. A question of this magnitude, and the impact it could have on the taxpayers in Madison, shouldn’t be decided by nine percent of the voters in town. It’s a critical time for our town and the state, and no matter what budget the General Assembly eventually passes, it’s guaranteed to have a negative impact on our town.

People are asking about the referendum. After more than two years of study and discussion, the Board of Education has recommended demolition of Ryerson School and the construction of a new school as Phase One of a much larger plan to update the town’s schools. This phase will cost $30 million. I respect the work that the board did and believe their conclusion is valid. In their deliberations, they evaluated all of the needs of our students and they believe this plan brings the most value to the town. However, I cannot ignore the current fiscal situation in Hartford or the recent vote to bond renovations to the library.

Borrowing a large sum of money is a commitment of taxpayer money. Next Tuesday, residents decide whether they are ready to make this investment or not. The Board of Education has prepared a fact sheet on its website, www.madison.k12.ct.us/directory/facilities/facility-study/fact-sheet. I encourage your readers to take a moment to become familiar with the facts on both sides before you vote.

This referendum is very important to everyone, whether they have children in school or not. Whatever the outcome, I’m committed to doing what is best for the children, citizens, and taxpayers of Madison.

I encourage your readers to vote on Sept. 26.
