What It Doesn’t Have

Now that I’ve decided to seek a seat on the Zoning Board of Appeals, it seems appropriate that I tell my Killingworth friends of my relevant experience and of my inclinations as might influence my decisions on the board.

When my wife Marilyn and I married in Killingworth, we agreed that we would live in this great town as soon as possible. I have been a resident for more than 40 years and Marilyn her whole life—almost. Living in Killingworth, we have appreciated open space, scenic roads without commercial presence, uncrowded neighborhoods, and animal-friendly zoning.

I am a Vietnam veteran, a master mason, and have been twice elected to the Zoning Board of Appeals, serving eight years, seven as its chairman. I have been treasurer of the Killingworth Land Trust and on the library board. I have been a trustee of my church and enjoyed being a member of the Killingworth Follies cast.

Recently a tourist in Madison asked me what sights she should see in our town. Thinking about how to answer, I realized that what is most special about Killingworth is what it does not have, rather than what it does have. There are no advertising billboards or street lights to pollute the night sky, nor are there any strip malls of attached stores or big box stores. There are no developments of houses on postage-stamp lots nor any traffic lights but one. Likewise, you never see traffic jams or vendor food trucks. Yes, we have a quiet small town appreciated by most of us.

I hope that your readers vote for me, but nevertheless, if not, I thank them for voting and for reading this far.
