Happy 350th

As Labor Day weekend brings a close to summer, the Killingworth Democratic Town Committee (KDTC) joins everyone in wishing all of Killingworth a happy 350th birthday celebration.

The sense of community and neighborliness that helped our earliest citizens carve out farms from rock-strewn woodlands is alive and well. The volunteerism that went hand-in-hand with that neighborliness is not often called on to raise a barn, return a meandering cow, or build a stone wall, but it continues to help the sick through its emergency services, put out fires through the volunteer fire company, and encourage learning through library activities and PTO programs. For the town itself, there are volunteers on boards and commissions doing the civic work necessary for well functioning governance. And that basic of direct democracy, the Town Meeting, flourishes still.

We have come a long way since 1667, but we’ve brought the founding virtues and strengths with us even as dramatic events and changes came down the Old Killingworth Turnpike. The culminating activities for the 350th celebration on Sept. 2 reflect community events of past centuries. Parades and town picnics virtually shout out small town America. The KDTC invites everyone to visit our table as we all enjoy the picnic at Parmelee Farm.
