Young at Heart

At least once a month I have the privilege of doing a “Lunch with Tom” at the Senior Center. It’s an opportunity for me to have a five star, three-course meal prepared by our chef, Kevin Wolfe, and served by our very friendly and competent staff, and mix with the seniors who attend that day (of whom I am one). We’ve developed quite a rapport, and I look forward to it so much that when I was forced to miss one last Tuesday, I immediately asked Austin Hall, the director of Senior Services, to reschedule me for two days later, which is today when I’m writing this.

While Senior Center to some people means a place for old people, from the level of engagement that I experience when I go there, I can tell you that they may be on in years, but they are young at heart and full of life. I move around a bit, but I have to be honest that I tend toward a favorite table of women, at least two of whom are in their 90s, whose conversation and banter is so much fun. Today we spoke about everything from President Trump (not too many fans) to living downtown 80-plus years ago and what that was like. Many of these folks have been around a long time and knew Madison when it was much different. The reminiscences are incredible!

Another table of primarily older gentlemen break each other’s chops (and mine) from the time I get there until lunch is over, and it’s so much fun to be part of. If your readers haven’t experienced lunch at the Senior Center, I heartily suggest they try it. I guarantee that they’ll enjoy it and go back again.
