Party Like it’s 1667

After two years of preparation, on Saturday, Sept. 2 Killingworth will party like it’s 1667! We’ll celebrate our 350th anniversary with a parade in the morning and a town picnic in the afternoon and evening.

The parade will step off at 10 a.m. from the corner of Stevens Road and move north on Route 81 to Recycle Way. It’ll include two fife and drum corps, a Killingworth Elementary School marching band, floats, a phalanx of vintage vehicles, and marchers ranging from state dignitaries to contingents from local organizations.

Many thanks go to local businesses along the route, who’re cooperating with the 350th committee to accommodate the brief closure of Route 81 on Sept. 2. All the businesses along the parade route north of La Foresta and MAWC Accounting will make spectator parking available.

The town picnic will run noon to 9 p.m. at Parmelee Farm, with entertainment throughout. Headlining the evening program are Braiden Sunshine, a semifinalist on NBC’s The Voice, and String of Pearls Big Band.

In the afternoon, Killingworth’s own musicians will offer a variety of performances, along with the Fireaway Quartet, seen recently in Artful Living’s production of The Music Man.

Throughout the picnic, many organizations will have booths with information, demonstrations, and activities. H-K Youth & Family Services will offer a variety of old-time family activities such as tug-o-war, potato sack and egg races, and corn hole toss from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Killingworth Land Conservation Trust will offer guided wilderness trail walks. Babe Ruth’s grand-daughter will sign photos.

Vendors and local groups will offer a variety of food for sale. Of course, everyone’s welcome to bring their own picnic. Propane grills are permitted, but no open fires or charcoal grills.
