Selectmen Made a Mistake

Nearly a decade ago, my husband Alan Felgate and I began to search for a community to raise a family. Our travels up and down the East Coast brought us to Clinton for the shoreline location, historic architecture, and small-town values. We saw so much potential here, and still do. Now a family of four, we remain fully committed to this beautiful jewel on the shoreline.

I have served as a volunteer in town government since moving to Clinton. In fall 2008, I was appointed to the Downtown Revitalization Committee, and have served two, four-year terms on the Planning & Zoning Commission. These appointments to town committees have taught me that we all have experiences and skills to share. During this time I also have recognized the complex issues that small towns face. I’ve learned governing a municipality is a challenging job for volunteers and there is a need for professional support.

After an 18 month review process involving extensive research, the bipartisan Charter Revision Commission recommended a new form of town government for Clinton. The Clinton Town Charter grants certain rights, powers, privileges, and functions to the people. However in July, the Board of Selectmen voted three to two to deny the citizens of Clinton the right to vote on these recommendations. I believe the Board of Selectmen made a mistake in denying Clinton voters the democratic right to determine the future of our town government.

I encourage your readers to join me in signing the petition calling for a town-wide vote—#letusvote.
