Protecting our Water

Another issue that should be discussed in Killingworth, is the protection of our water supply. Killingworth is unique in many ways and among our common community characteristics is that all of us take water, one of the basic human needs to live and grow, directly from a well just outside our door.

We’ve been told that the chemicals that have been sprayed along many of our roads to kill the vegetation, meets Connecticut state standards, but given that over the years we’ve discovered that governments sometimes can make bad decisions, maybe we should explore having our own Killingworth standards that might be more stringent. Going to a mandatory municipal water system because of a contaminated water resource, with all that that would entail, is one thing to consider as we debate how we should be protecting our water resources.

Thinking about protecting Killingworth’s water resources is a step in making this shared asset’s valuation grow. There are many ways to grow our Taxable Grand List without spending funds or keeping our mill rate low to attract buyers and helping current owners. Protecting our many unique characteristics enhances our town’s net worth.

We’ll have to see which candidate will address this issue during this Killingworth election cycle, and move toward an increase in the protection of our shared precious water resource. State water protecting standards may not be enough for Killingworth.
