It is a Plus

I write supporting Rick Carlson’s application to construct an upscale restaurant in Essex. It is a plus for the immediate area, and a plus for the community.

Eight years ago, Dorothy and I moved from long Island to be near our children and grandchildren. I’m 85 and retired since 1995. I became active in community affairs in BayShore/Brightwaters, Long Island. I’ve stood idly by as recent developments accelerated Essex’s decline and witnessed bad decisions that compounded the deterioration of Essex and the charm and historic uniqueness that mark Essex as a “must” destination for visitors.

Enterprises that have relocated to nearby towns are thriving. Could high rents be the cause?

Gone is our windmill. Construction of the ill-advised housing project by the railroad, the empty store fronts, the proliferation of “For Sale” signs everywhere, should concern us all. School enrollment is down. Visiting boaters must travel to nearby communities for supplies that were once a stroll from Essex docks.

Witnessing Essex repeat Long Island’s mistakes recalls a John Adams quote, “Every problem is an opportunity in disguise.” Solving problems is difficult. Decision makers must recognize that their outlooks are inconsistent with those that will work to bring about the needed changes.

One thing is certain: If the powers that be ignore applications like Rick Carlson’s and continue to throw up road blocks and kick the can down the road, the needed changes will never occur. We won’t attract new businesses, and form a workable profile that suits the needs of our citizens and visitors. One way or another, we all have skin in the game. I encourage your readers to get involved. A thriving community affects us all, our children and grandchildren.

Again, do not let projects like Rick’s get away!
