Thanks and Concern

As the president of the Old Saybrook Garden Club, I would personally like to thank the community for supporting our club’s annual Gardeners’ Market held on the Town Green this past May. We had a very successful year, surpassing our goals, and we look forward to helping Old Saybrook look its best all year.

As our only fundraiser, the Gardeners’ Market proceeds enable us to pursue our civic beautification projects. Our signature projects include planting and maintaining the 23 medians running down Main Street, the flower beds at the Old Saybrook Fire House and Constitution Garden in front of Saybrook Country Barn, and the container gardens at Acton Library. Although the gardens got off to a cold, wet start, I hope residents enjoy all the colors and beauty as they start to fill in.

Our more recent project, the Street Gardens Recognition Program, which encourages local businesses to beautify their entrances, has been a wonderful addition to creating summertime interest. Each December, the club’s Main Street wreaths and median Christmas trees brighten Old Saybrook during the year’s darker days for residents and visitors alike.

Safety is utmost in my mind as I travel Main Street. Our members spend time every week maintaining the median gardens. I ask all residents to please slow down when they see our safety cones and the new safety vests that we wear and to ask our visitors and teenagers to do the same. It means we are out there weeding, deadheading, and fertilizing to keep the beauty blooming all summer long.
